Women’s basketball springs back after rough start

After losing 12 games in a row, the Alderson Broaddus women’s basketball team snapped their losing streak with a win against Ohio Valley University on Saturday, Feb. 16.

The last win for the Battlers was before winter break against Ohio Dominican on Dec. 15.They had a tough start to the game after being down 20-12 in the first quarter, but quickly turned things around in the second quarter. The Battlers managed to close the lead at the half after outscoring the Fighting Scots 21-18 in the second quarter.

Coming out of the locker room at halftime, head coach Roy “Bogie” Boggess put a 1-2-2 press on OVU then fell back into a man-to-man defense. This proved to be more effective than the 2-3 zone defense the Battlers ran in the first half. This man-to-man defense forced OVU nine turnovers in the second half.

Freshman point guard Yolanda Florida led the Battlers in scoring with 14 points while Ta’Sharra Jefferies added 12 points. Leading rebounders were Jeana Weatherspoon (7) and Celeste Walters (6). Each teammate contributed to the win, with the bench combined for 27 of the Battlers’ 64 points. AB women’s basketball, now 4-17, hopes to continue this wave by finishing out the season on a high note during their last four games.

AB women’s basketball heads to Kentucky on Feb. 21 for a four day away trip, playing against Trevecca on Thursday and then Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday.
